Upon completion of this course, the student will have reviewed:
- Explain the basic principles and applications of ultrasonic testing
- Describe the qualifications and certifications applicable to Level I, II, and III personnel
- Define and differentiate between the various modes of sound waves, such as shear, Rayleigh, longitudinal, and lamb waves
- Describe the concepts of acoustical impedance, impedance ratio, refraction, mode conversion, Snell’s law, and critical angles within ultrasonic testing scenarios
- Recognize common ultrasonic testing equipment along with functionality of the test equipment
- Conduct instrument calibration, standardizing, and pretest equipment condition checks
- Explain the role and types of transducers in ultrasonic testing, along with transducer elements, frequency, selection, near/far field zones, beam spread, resolution, couplant usage, and the effect of frequency and diameter
- Describe the most commonly used ultrasonic testing methods and the sub-techniques within them
- Interpret ultrasonic signals to determine the presence of defects such as cracks, voids, and inclusions
- Evaluate the quality of base materials such as ingots, castings, and composites, and assess their compliance with quality standards
